What is lifestyle?

Lifestyle refers to the way a person lives. It encompasses the choices, habits, and attitudes that shape their daily routines and long-term health.

Here's a breakdown of the key aspects of lifestyle:

  • Daily Habits: This includes your routine activities such as sleep patterns, exercise habits, eating habits, and substance use (smoking, alcohol).

  • Health Behaviors: The choices you make regarding your physical and mental well-being, like exercising regularly, eating nutritious foods, getting enough sleep, and managing stress.

  • Socioeconomic Factors: Your income, education level, occupation, and social environment can all influence your lifestyle choices and access to resources that impact health.

  • Values and Beliefs: Your personal values and cultural beliefs can shape your attitudes towards health, food choices, and activity levels.

What are lifestyle diseases?

Lifestyle diseases also called non-communicable diseases (NCDs) include those that cause death like – heart attack, stroke, cancer, Alzhemier’s disease, Diabetes, hypertension etc. some of them may be of genetic cause, but even in those cases, most have some lifestyle component which can be modified.                Some lifestyle disease though doesn’t directly cause death, but reduce quality of life like – neck pain, back pain, giddiness, depression, joint pains, reduced mobility (hence independence), vision loss, headache etc.

Why Prevent lifestyle Diseases?

There are hundreds of thousands of health conditions that can affect a person, but a small number of them are much more common. In fact, the top 10 causes of death and disability account for 90% of health problems. By specifically targeting these major causes, we can resolve over 90-95% of health-related issues.

Modern lifestyle diseases often share common root causes. By addressing these root causes—rather than just focusing on blood test results—we can achieve holistic health. This approach is not only more effective but also economical, leading to many more happy and healthy years of life.
